Once you reach a point when you can one- or two-shot most enemies from range, can avoid detection while doing so and can take a few hits or heal yourself effectively (basically when you no longer need a meatshield) you'll probably want to avoid using followers.Īlso be aware that you will skill/level up slower using followers as you will have less opportunity to inflict/take damage. As annoying as they can be in close quarters a follower is very helpful to an early archer when you're out in the open and travelling distances on foot, especially when dragons appear. Any of the early ones will help in that respect and can take attention away from you while you practice your archery (just be wary of the issues above). Generally speaking followers are notoriously bad at/unable to sneak so not only do most of them give away your position by charging at enemies as soon as they're marked as hostile (even if they haven't seen you) but also in the close confines of dungeons/ruins/caves they get in the way of your line of sight.Įarly game is a relatively dangerous period for an archer because you haven't yet skilled up enough to be able to take care of enemies before they are on top of you, so a decent melee follower is a good idea. If you're an archer then I assume you're using stealth a lot, which restricts the effectiveness of followers, especially when dungeon-crawling.
